Respecting gloss on skirtings and doors

High gloss bounces light with a hard brilliance that sharpens crisp joinery. On detailed doors it catches every edge. It is the most demanding finish to lay well.

Because gloss returns so strongly, it betrays every flaw beneath it. Filling, sanding and clean conditions all count the result. Preparation is half of the job.

A still room is key, as airborne grit lands in the open film and spoils it. Seal the windows and let the dust calm first. The reward is a flawless surface.

Gloss wipes harder than any softer sheen, which favours doors and frames that take knocks. A damp wipe renews it. That durability is part of its value.

Brush it from a loaded brush and lay off in long strokes along the grain. Fussing with a setting film leaves lap marks. A steady hand shows here.

Gloss has fallen in and out of fashion, yet on heritage joinery it still shines like nothing else. Pair it with muted walls so it reads as a jewel. Used wisely, it is timeless.
